Jesus was Jewish as were the people to whom he preached. The early generations of his followers also did not see themselves as belonging to a different religion, but considered themselves to be Jewish. For this reason, we will explore aspects of Jewish religion and culture as related to selected teachings and stories from the Christian cannon to gain a deeper appreciation of what the teachings of Jesus might have meant to those who were present during his lifetime and shortly thereafter.
Jordan Hersh has served as the rabbi of Beth Sholom Congregation since 2013. He began his formal Jewish studies at a Yeshiva in Jerusalem and received both rabbinic ordination and an M.A. in Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Languages from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
